Synopsis:
The Native and Indigenous Student Research Symposium aims to provide a platform for UC San Diego students to share their research while centering Native and Indigenous perspectives on knowledge and community. This forum seeks to foster interdisciplinary dialogue and encourage engagement that values traditional ways of knowing. The symposium will honor the responsibilities that come with producing and sharing knowledge, reinforcing a commitment to ethical engagement and cultural respect.
Guided by the UC San Diego Intertribal Resource Center’s Roots of Community—Representation, Respect, Relational Reciprocity, and Relevance—the symposium will support an inclusive, decolonizing framework that amplifies Native and Indigenous voices and perspectives. By embracing these principles, the symposium aims to nurture meaningful relationships, promote Native and Indigenous epistemologies, and cultivate a space for academic and cultural exchange.
Symposium Guidelines:
Presentations should incorporate the following values.
Representation
- Submissions should highlight Native and Indigenous voices, research, and methodologies. Participants should center Native and Indigenous perspectives in their work.
- Presentations should reflect diverse Native and Indigenous experiences and knowledge systems, reinforcing community empowerment and visibility.
Respect
- Research and presentations should be conducted with ethical considerations, ensuring the protection of Native and Indigenous knowledge and cultural practices.
- Participants should engage with Native and Indigenous perspectives in a way that acknowledges their interconnectedness with land and community.
Relational Reciprocity
- The symposium encourages collaborative and reciprocal relationships between students, faculty, staff, and Native and Indigenous communities.
- Presentations should reflect accountability to Native and Indigenous communities, prioritizing trust and long-term engagement.
Relevance
- Research and presentations should draw upon Native and Indigenous epistemologies, integrating culturally rooted methodologies and perspectives.
- We encourage topics that address issues that are meaningful to Native and Indigenous communities.

Submission and Participation Details:
- The symposium is open to all UC San Diego students.
- Abstracts should be submitted with a brief description of how the presentation aligns with the outlined Roots of Community.
